The Heart Of Creativity

1 Timothy 4:14 says, " Do not neglect your gift." I was reminded of that last night. Every one is creative, you don't have to be a professional artist to be creative.

Don't neglect your talent, don't give up your own art. We all have our art.

If you play, practice.
If you sing, go back to that routine you used to have for warming up and vocalising.
If you write, write. Jot down every idea in a notebook.
If you are a poet, invite a few friends over for an informal reading of your poems.
If you're a dancer, put on some music and dance.
If you're in drama, read a good play and have a dramatic party. Go see a play or musical.
If you like cooking, just put those random ingredients together creatively to make a dish.

Someone (I forgot who) once said to me that people who think they are not creative are all creative (because we are all made in the image of God), but they just haven't tapped into the potential that is available in Christ. Living in God's image means using our creativity and imagination to the full. There are a lot of opportunities before us yet, as long as every vision, every creative idea, every imagination is brought into focus through the cross.

When ever I teach art I get the line 'I can't draw' thrown at me. I ban this statement in my classes now because if you can hold a pencil and push it along the page, you can draw! Thanks for this reminder not to 'neglect my gift'. : )

I've got some poems that need an airing. Any takers?

You're welcome Amanda. I always think that I can't draw, but someone once told me that if I could write in Chinese, I certainly can draw haha. That's a good insight!

But I see myself more a performing artist than a visual artist.

So, you can write in Chinese? I like what you said here: Living in God's image means using our creativity and imagination to the full. There are a lot of opportunities before us yet, as long as every vision, every creative idea, every imagination is brought into focus through the cross. I have a lot of things that I want to do that I think are creative. I'm kind of waiting for the time to spend more time doing them. I see myself doing them when I am semi-retired. So, is talking with people (interviewing them) a creative venture? In what way, if any? (Would you mind answering me, if you do, on my site? I forget to come back and look for the answer to my questions!

Great post. Thanks for the reminder. I have a novel I am editing and drawings I'm doing for someone's book.

Haven't see you around for awhile. I trust that you are well. May I link your blog with mine? I can't remember if I've asked you yet.

Thank you for this reminder, Kitty, and for your generous encouragement. I think that's a gift that you have that you exercise well :)

Hi Andrea, yes I can write in Chinese. So what are some of the things that you want to do that are creative?

I believe talking to people or interviewing them can be a creative venture. If the questions (discussions) are well thought out, you can develop lots of opportunities to create deep friendship or relationship. I think creativity can help us build up relationships (through creative, loving and caring deeds, surprises, breaking of routine and meaningful conversation etc). I hope I can learn to do that well.

So what are your ideas about talking to people as a creative venture?

Thanks for your kind words Rulan. So you're an editor and a drawing genius? What a gift!!

Yes I'm well, just a little busy at times. Sure you may link my blog with yours. The pleasure is mine :)

Erin, thank YOU for your generous encouragement. I've learned heaps from you.

Cool, thank you. Hey, I'm not an editor. I'm an author who is editing her own novel. Plus an artist. Sorry I wasn't very clear on it.

Kitty Cheng said...

Hey Rulan, so what's your novel about? Must be a HUGE job to edit the novel yeah?

If I sew, turn a piece of cloth into a handiwork :)
If I do gardening, turn a seed into a beautiful bloom ;)
