Fear Of The Lord

I have been reading the book of Proverbs lately, and I read a great quote about it from the one year bible blog: "Proverbs persists in confronting us with the urgency of coming to a decision regarding the fear of the Lord." That really got me thinking.

What exactly does the fear of the Lord mean to you?

Deuteronomy 13:4 is a good summary of what fearing God means to me:

"It is the LORD your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him."

For the past couple of weeks I've been working my way through a set of readings and prayer points distributed by the Australian Prayer Network, and that was one the daily verses.

It means obeying Him, serving Him, and doing our best to walk in step with Him.

If we had a healthy relationship with our human fathers growing up, this would have been based on love but also a healthy respect. One of the ways that the Book of Proverbs speaks to me is that it reminds me of God's Father heart for us, His children. In a way, you can read it as a father's advice to His son. It's a limitless source of wisdom and guidance to help us navigate our way through our fallen world, and avoid the traps that so many fall into. This reverential fear motivates you to heed advice when it's given to you.
