How Do You Spell Faith?

It was Melbourne Cup public holiday today. While everyone in Melbourne was having a day off (well except some students who are facing exams), I was working flat out in the office preparing for the World Team End of Year Party coming up next Thursday, the play and the presentation. Through working on the presentation on some unreached people groups and reading about various stories, I was reminded again that many great people of God have one thing in common, and that is that they have tremendous faith, and they are willing to take risks for their Lord.

Kel over at the X facta posted a very meaningful entry called Water walking. She suggested that according to Simon Peter, faith was spelt as Risk as follows:

R relinquish your doubts
I increase your dependence on God
S step out of your comfort zone
K know the miracle will come

So do you spell faith as risk?

Yes but a well thought out and prayerfully considered one. This may sound overly spiritual but I believe that if we truely consider God as sovereign and in control of all things then we have to take risks for him. It's like the saying 'Attempt great things for God, expect great things from God' (William Carey).

I agree that taking a risk to step out in faith does require thought and prayerful consideration - but sometimes we do so much of that until all the ducks are lined up and when we do step out - no faith was really required because we could already see the most possible outcome or results.

Yes Amanda attempting great things for God does require stepping out in faith and taking risks, and surely when we do that we can expect great things from HIM.

Kel what you say is so true. I must admit I'm guilty of that myself. There needs to be wisdom from God as to have the balance between thought & paryer ful consideration and stepping out in faith without delay.

I think most of us would be guilty of using 'I'm praying about it' as an excuse (I hear that one all the time in regards to missions). We need to be serious about the thing we're praying for and as soon as we know it's what God wants us to do, we MUST act. Otherwise, what was the point in praying about it! : )

Amen to that! But the problem many people have is that they only pray, but don't listen to God.

Kitty, I love Peter and his faith - always ending up in the right place but sometimes having a stumble getting there. A few years ago I wrote this poem (perhaps not the best you ever read) to express my thoughts.

THE FOURTH WATCH

And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
Matthew 14: 31 (NKJV)

Lord, I long to see you
On the waters of my life
I long to walk beside you
Though tossed by winds of strife

I set out on the water
Imitating you
Striding out so confidently
In all I say and do.

Then my senses speak to me
Of the boisterous wind and waves,
Of darkness, noise and mystery -
Questions from underwater caves.

I sink, my Lord, beneath the power
Of this external force.
My eyes of faith have grown dim.
I cannot stay the course.

But treat me, Lord, as you did Peter
When he began to doubt.
Guide me, Lord, and reach me
With your saving hand stretched out.

I have an old proverb that means a lot in my life:

Work like it all depends on you -
Pray like it all depends on God

Wow Brigid, that was such a beautiful poem. One that I can so identify with! And I like that old proverb too. Thanks so much for your comments. Really appreciate it. We've got to catch up soon. Miss you.
