What Are Your Words For 2010?

On the morning of New Year's Eve, I spent hours looking back at my photos, journals & blogs from the last few years. I reflected back to the last New Year's Eve and how I was enjoying preparing and planning for our BIG DAY. Some of the emotions that I had about how the year ahead would pan out, the obstacles I didn't know I would have to face in life & ministry.

I was thinking about the new year ahead, vision, mission, dreams, goals, aspirations, desires and hopes for my family, ministries, communities, businesses, my city and the world..... I have many dreams, and I have many personal challenges, yet I feel strong and ready for an exciting New Year.

Five words came to my mind as I think about 2010:
1.Transformation
2.Purpose
3.Love
4.Healing
5.Provision

To me these five words are very powerful. I believe they will keep my spirit strong, they will keep me believing, they will keep me focussed, and they will move me forward. Out of the five words, TRANSFORMATION is one that I have the strongest emotions to. One of my life goals is to experience the ongoing process of transformation, and help others do the same. It's my heart's desire to be an agent of transformation.

I believe "transformation" is something we allow to be done to us, not something we do by our own power alone. I pray that we can submit to God's power and by His grace, "changed into another form" from "caterpillars" to "butterflies", hence becoming a "new creation" (2Co 5:17).

Christmas Reflection & New Year's Thoughts

I am so thankful for all the Lord has done for me in 2009, and I am exceedingly excited to see more to come in 2010. As we enter the last week of December, I can't help but to look back on 2009, and look forward to a new year ahead.

This Christmas was the first Christmas Deric and I celebrated together as husband and wife, along with my beloved Mum and two of our good friends. We had a restful & relaxing day rejoicing in the Lord, amidst cooking and reflecting on the real meaning of Christmas - the birth of Jesus.

On Boxing Day we went to our church's outreach activity where there was a BBQ organised for people in the community. I got talking to a homeless guy and learned so much from him. That really reminded me that presence is just as important, if not more important than presents during Christmas and in our daily lives.

I am interested to know what the Lord has done for you in 2009? Also, if you have any thoughts and visions for 2010 I would love for you to share them in the comments. I'd love to pray for you and with you.

Are You Part Of Advent Conspiracy?

Three weeks ago a good friend of mine from the US asked me the above question. I had no idea what Advent Conspiracy (AC) was. She told me about it, and invited me to join the movement. (If you don't know what it is, you can find out more through their website on http://www.adventconspiracy.org/). I was so touched by the principles and concepts behind AC, but quickly forgot about it due to busyness. Tonight I was reminded of AC from the video at church, and decided to spread the word.

Christmas has the power to change the world. So, what happened? What was once a time to celebrate the birth of a savior has somehow turned into a season of stress, traffic jams and shopping lists.

And when it's all over, many of us are left with presents to return, looming debt that will take months to pay off, and this empty feeling of missed purpose. Is this what we really want out of Christmas?

What if Christmas became a world-changing event again?

My new family has a 'no-gift' policy - all money for "Christmas shopping" will go to meaningful causes instead. Like one of the ethos of AC, we prefer giving presence over giving presents, for the sake of it. And we are determined to celebrate the reason for the season - Jesus Christ our Saviour! We vote compassion over consumption!

I want to encourage you to join this movement, and I pray that the Lord will use it mightily for HIS glory.

Wishing you all a blessed & joy-filled Christmas, as you celebrate the birth of our Lord, spend time with loved ones, and reflect on the glorious gospel and the wonderful news of Immanuel - God with us!

Transformation

There are many crises of our times in all areas — family, economic, religious, moral, societal and political. There is an unprecedented need for spiritual renewal all over the world. If there is still the opportunity for radical transformation, we desperately need a way forward, a Godly strategy that will set forth the principles we need to follow.

Since becoming part of the Transforming Melbourne movement, I have been reading and reflecting on the subject of transformation. C. S. Lewis once argued, every culture has its own blind spots, its own outlook. It is good at "seeing certain truths and especially liable to make certain mistakes." C. S. Lewis placed great value on seeing through other people's eyes. He said, "My own eyes are not enough for me, I will see through those of others."

In this context we desperately need community, the church, so that we are stimulated to love and good deeds. The church, as Paul said to Timothy, was intended to be "the pillar and foundation of the truth" that transforms. We can hope for victory not because of our own strength but because the battle is the Lord's. We can trust in the character and purposes of our Lord. We need to intervene in the conflict, but we also need to maintain our strength through intercession. Even if we lose personally, our God wins in the end. That is our sure and certain hope.

Several concluding observations can be made related to transformation as a unifying mission for the Church at the beginning of the twenty-first century. A three-year World Inquiry related to the mission of God has shown that “the patterns of the past are showing ‘wear’ and are in need of repair.” A new paradigm that helps us interpret and organize our approach to mission for the future has emerged. God is on a mission of transformation and is calling out servants to act as catalysts in mobilizing the whole body of Christ to bless the nations through the transformation of people, churches and culture.

Holistic Health

Last night, I was feeling weary & weak. I had an early night and rested for most of today and now I am feeling better. Does that mean I am healthy and well?

The truth is, if we are able to eat, sleep and work, it does NOT necessarily mean that we are healthy. Health is holistic. According to World Health Organisation (WHO), "health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."

Holistic view of health is a view in medical practice upholding that all aspects of people's needs, psychological, physical and social, should be taken into account and seen as a whole. Disease is a result of physical, emotional, spiritual, social and environmental imbalance. We need to develop a much more holistic and well-rounded view of what it means to be healthy.

There are three areas to each person:
(1) Our Body (the physical nature)
(2) Our Soul (the mind, will, emotional & intellectual nature), and
(3) Our Spirit (the part of us that transcends this world and communes with God).

Even though our body may not be 'diseased', we do need to make sure that our soul & spirit are healthy too.

Fight Breast Cancer

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Australia. Although it is almost over, the fight for a cure isn't!

New Ventures In A New Season

It's been a while since I wrote this blog. I have been really busy since my wedding 5months ago and the recent postponed honeymoon in Malaysia. Along with my ministry with Transforming Melbourne, I have officially started writing the manuscript of a new book about transformation, as well as pursuing the idea for an online interactive learning environment (ILE) and I am very excited about it all!

I have started the program of building the website for this virtual online training about dating and relationships. With fear and trepidation I embark on this new venture so I can be even more equipped to help people in transforming their lives and achieving their dreams. Pray for me friends. I need to dive into the major world of e-learning, book writing and in depth research. Exciting and challenging so far!

When I Gave Up Talking.....

During the 40 hour famine last weekend, I went beneath the water, let the world above go on, and gave up talking. The experience was both enriching yet challenging! I spent a fair bit of time praying, as I believe that prayer could be like a canvas of silence, and on it we paint sparely, with no word or sound. Instead of 'talking' to God like I usually do during prayer, I simply spent time with Him, and realised that silence can really be a symphony bathing my ears with God's Presence. No wonder it's been said that silence is golden.

On the other hand, as I looked into the silence, at times I battled with a sea of mutes, which led me to begin thinking about those who don't have a voice in our society. There are so many injustice issues in our world, so many without a voice: the hungry kids in extreme poverty, the women that are trafficked victims, the refugees that have experienced war, the homeless people on the street.

The Father heart of God breaks over His voiceless children. What would our city look like if the voiceless children of God are cared for?

Examen

I came across Darren Rowse's post on how he mediates, which really inspires me. The meditation is called "Examen", which includes 5 steps/parts to it:

1. Recall you are in the Presence of God
2. Look at your day with Gratitude
3. Ask for help from the God as you Review Your Day
4. Review your Day
5. Reconcile and Resolve

I think this will be helpful for me, and I'll try to use this exercise regularly.

Courage

These last few days / nights saw me feeling both pumped (excited) and under the pump (stressed) about a number of things, including the expenses of the wedding, my upcoming marriage, plans for the future, work, ministries and business. These mixed feelings cause my emotions to be up and down lately.

But God spoke to me, which really comforted and helped me. He said:

" I am here. Fear not. Can you really trust Me? I am a God of Power, as well as a Man of Love, so human, yet so divine.

Just trust. I cannot, and I will not fail you. All is well. Many are praying for you.
Such wonderful things are coming to you: Joy - Peace - Assurance - Security - Health - Happiness - Laughter - COURAGE!!"

I read the following article by Rick Warren, and was very encouraged by it.

The smile of God is the goal of life. Since pleasing God is the first purpose of your life, your most important task is to discover how to do that. The Bible says, "Figure out what will please Christ, and then do it" (Ephesians 5:10 MSG). Fortunately, the Bible gives us a clear example of a life that gives pleasure to God in the story of Noah. In Noah's day, the entire world had become morally bankrupt. Everyone lived for their own pleasure, not God's. God couldn't find anyone on earth interested in pleasing him, so he was grieved and regretted making man. God became so disgusted with the human race that he considered wiping it out.But there was one man who made God smile. The Bible says, "Noah was a pleasure to the Lord" (Genesis 6:8 LB).God said, "This guy brings me pleasure. He makes me smile. I'll start over with his family." Because Noah brought pleasure to God, you and I are alive today.Over the next few days, we will learn from Noah's life the five acts of worship that make God smile. Here is the first one:God smiles when we love him supremely. Noah loved God more than anything else in the world, even when no one else did! The Bible tells us Noah "consistently followed God's will and enjoyed a close relationship with him" (Genesis 6:9 NLT).This is what God wants most from you: a relationship! It's the most astounding truth in the universe: our Creator wants to fellowship with us. God made you to love you, and he longs for you to love him back. He says, "I don't want your sacrifices—I want your love; I don't want your offerings—I want you to know me" (Hosea 6:6 LB).Can you sense God's passion for you in this verse? God deeply loves you and desires your love in return. He longs for you to know him and spend time with him. This is why learning to love God and to be loved by him should be the greatest objective of your life.Nothing else comes close in importance. Jesus called it the greatest commandment. He said, "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment" (Matthew 22:37-38 NIV).

Let us all pursue this worthwhile goal of putting a smile on God's face :)

Reflections From Prayer

I am following the 40 days of prayer and fasting from Transforming Melbourne. This week the theme is "Seeing the Church as Jesus Sees it." God has been asking me if I am open to see and respond to what He shows me. I felt challenged when I prayed with no agenda but Him alone and felt the Lord wanted me to do more than that.

The prayer coordinator Sue Tinworth from TM said she had felt Jesus’ invitation to love 'the Church’ for Him. The Church (His bride) that He loves so much. (Ephesians 5:25-27). This dear woman whom He entrusts to His son to take to His home. (John 19:26-27). He entrusts His bride to us, friends of the bride groom, while she is waiting for Him. John 3:29 Before he left Shepherd entrusted His lambs to those who truly, truly, truly love Him, saying, Take care of my sheep. (John 21:15,16,17). Do we see the Church as lovingly as Jesus does?


I resonate with Sue's reflections on being one with Jesus, and I long for that quiet rest, satisfaction and delight in Him. I desire to focus on who Jesus is in these weeks of prayer and fasting, and beyond.....I am committed to loving Jesus with all my heart, soul, mind and strength. I must admit the idea of Jesus' invitation to seeing and responding to what He shows me about the Church and loving ‘her’ for Him is quite surprising, if not foreign.

Lord, please help me to truly see the Church as lovingly as you do.

Failing Forward

I read an article in a magazine by Dr John C. Maxwell, which is titled "Failing Forward". John Maxwell talked about Vincent Van Gogh's many failures: he failed as an art dealer, failed his entrance exam to theology school, and was fired by the church after an ill-fated attempt at missionary work. In fact, during his life, he seldom experienced anything other than failure as an artist.

Although a single painting by Van Gogh "Stary stary night" would become one of the most paintings in histroy, in his lifetime Van Gogh sold only one painting, four months prior to his death.

Before developing his theory of relativity, Albert Einstein encountered academic failure. He was expelled from school and another teacher predicted that he would never amount to anything. Einstein even failed his entrance exam into college.

Failure didn't stop Vincent Van Gogh from painting, or Albert Einstein from theorizing, but it has paralyzed countless leaders and prevented them from reaching their potential.

At some point, all great achievers are tempted to believe they are failures. But in spite of that, they persevere. In the face of adversity, shortcomings, and rejection, they hold onto self-believe and refuse to see themselves as failures. Here are seven abilities of achievers that enable them to rebound from failure and keep moving forward.

God uses every circumstance in the lives of those who love Him to shape them and use them for His purpose! It can be hard for us to accept this. It does not mean that God is pleased with all things. God grieves with us when we see the many who have died of the bush fires in Victoria, Australia or when we bear the brunt of someone else's sin. He is angry when a drunk driver slams into the car of someone we love. He grieves and groans with us. And He understands our painful experiences.

But God sits on His throne above all these things, and He overrules even the most evil purpose and uses even those fallen, evil or senseless things to accomplish His good purpose in our lives. That means we can embrace any circumstance we find ourselves in (good or bad) as God's opportunity for us to grow and to minister in His name to others.

Today I received an email from a very successful business owner, who told me that the use of the colors on website has implications. When people see certain colors they can change their emotions or they can symbolize things related to the colors. According to this person, here are a list of colors with some emotions and symbolizations they can cause:

Red - love, excitement, warmth
Pink - romantic, affection, sensuality
White - purity, peace, perfection
Blue - sky, water, travel, freedom, truth
Purple - royalty, dignity
Black - space, night, authority
Green - money, calm, envy, greed
Yellow - light, purity, understanding
Orange - autumn, youthfulness, fire
Brown - wood, comfort, strength

Relationship With God

It’s interesting how fast January 2009 seems to have flown by, its already February 2009. I have been really enjoying the One Year Bible Blog. My marathon pace is going well. The wonderful habit of reading from God’s Word regularly is settling into place in my life, and I want to keep my eyes forward on the path before me in 2009!

As Paul tells us in Philippians 3:14 - "I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." Let us each press on toward the goal! At the moment, I am up to the readings in Exodus with the Plagues, the Passover, the Exodus, the Crossing of the Red Sea, and Manna from Heaven! Matthew brings several incredible Parables, Palm Sunday, The Great Commandment and the Seven Woes!

I have set some big goals and resolutions for 2009 and amongst that, I know that ultimately my life is in a very good place because I am moving forward with my relationship with God. Reading and studying God’s Word regularly is a high priority. How about you? Do you agree that reading from God’s Word each day and growing in your relationship with God is a priority and very important in your life?

Forgiveness and Forgetfulness

After his previous poem, 'Smashing China Plates', my dear artist / photographer / poet friend John Englezos had written another beautiful poem called 'Forgiveness and Forgetfulness', which really touched my heart. Here goes:

Forgiveness and Forgetfulness are sitting, holding hands,
out on their verandah hearing songs of old jazz bands.

Forgiveness has lost all her teeth, Forgetfulness is blind.
Forgetfulness forgets the words, Forgiveness doesn't mind.

He only sees her youthful face from all those years ago
and even though he's lost his sighther touch he'll always know.

She asks "Do you recall past pains?"He answers "No I don't"
He turns and asks "And you my Love?"She smiles and says "I won't".

They weren't always this happy. This couple that you see
They once lived in a townhouse in a town called Misery.

He'd write, all night by candlelight, His face a solemn frown,
Recalling every single wrong and writing them all down.

She wasn't that much better,With her face a furrowed pout
All day long she'd wash her clothesher stains never came out.

Her head down and teeth gritted. Her deep cries left unheard.
His mind forever in the dark. He never spoke a word.

Both of them had wounded heartsone hard, the other broken.
Both together, yet apart. No words of grace were spoken.

Until one day the house caught fire. There was noone to blame.
They ran out and watched all they owned, get swallowed up in flame.

She lost all of her wardrobe all those clothes covered with stains.
He lost his precious journals full of all his precious pains.

So hand in hand they walked away, And left it all behind.
Her jaw unlocked, her teeth fell out!In daylight, he went blind!

Their new house is called Happy,it makes noises through the day,
The floorboards creak but they’d not have itany other way.

So if you asked what he once wrote. That he would not recall.
And if you ask her what she needs, She’d say “I have it all”.

He can't remember what they lost. She knows how much she has.
We watch them both sit back and smileand listen to old jazz.

Now Is that not the life you want. The story you’d be living?
The joy and peace that could be found, Forgetting and Forgiving…

“An Eye for eye and tooth for tooth”This worldly law is ruthless.
But Forgiveness and Forgetfulnessare quite happy… blind and toothless.

Transforming Melbourne Blog

I have started another blog called "Transforming Melbourne Blog". “Transforming Melbourne” is a movement of Christians praying and acting together with the vision that God will renew His Church and not only bring new life to the people of the city of Melbourne (Australia), but transform its culture and society. The focus include: Fostering Unity, Promoting Prayer, Researching Needs, Networking Pastors and Leaders, Stirring Faith and Vision, Informing God's People & Trusting God.

A 3-year project of Transforming Melbourne "ALL MELBOURNE MATTERS" has been completed. It's a research of the Church to reach the city. The vision of the project is the systematic research of the demographics of Greater Melbourne and the size, locations and vitality of all churches across the City to enable and encourage the whole Church to develop a common vision and coordinated strategies for ministry and intentional mission to our city.

Smashing China Plates

A friend of mine wrote the following poem about the 'fruit of the Spirit', which I like very much. I'd love to share with you:

Love sits at a tables lowly smashing china plates.
Wondering whatever happenedto those canceled dinner dates.

Joy is a red head girl he wants to ask to dance
her friends come past and then she leave she never gets the chance.

Peace is a baker in furious passion he bakes
but noone comes into his shop to try his bread and cakes.

Patience is a foster mum, her house shrinks and grows
she tidies up the children's mess and on and on it goes...

Kindness will work overtime at no extra cost
but noone compliments her dress or how much weight she's lost.

Goodness opens wide his doors, he shares a meal with ease,
but when he goes into his lounge they've taken his cd's.

Faithful coughs and sneezes he stands shivering in the rain,
she said "I'll just be back in five"but didn't come back again.

Gentleness eats alone in a quiet place she'll cry
she wants to go and talk to him but won't because she's shy.

Self control is a werewolfby day he hums a tune by night
he sits upon the roof and howls up at the moon.

For those of you who hear and know it is of Fruit I speak,
perhaps I'm just too cynicalor maybe getting weak.

But as we slowly turn to grey I fear this world's blind eyes
It seems these godly qualities Noone will recognise...

So take the time to look and see and show people you know
You'll be watering God's garden then sit back and watch it grow...

Christian Faith Is Vital To The Future Of The World

In 2005 a book by American sociologist, Rodney Stark was published, called The Victory of Reason: How Christianity Led to Freedom, Capitalism, and Western Success. The ‘modern world,’ he argues ‘arose only in Christian societies’ thanks to Christianity’s commitment to ‘reason, progress, and moral equality’

The capacity which Christianity has to contribute to social, cultural and economic progress has been long observed.

In his book Jesus in Beijing, the journalist David Aikman tells of a lecture he attended in China in 2002. A professor from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences had this to say to a group of American visitors about his years of study in the West:
'One of the things we were asked to look into was what accounted for the success, in fact, the pre-eminence of the West over all the world. We studied everything we could from the historical, political, economic, and cultural perspective. At first, we thought it was because you had more powerful guns than we had. Then we thought it was because you had the best political system. Next we focused on your economic system. But in the past twenty years, we have realized that the heart of your culture is your religion: Christianity. The moral foundation of social and cultural life was what made possible the emergence of capitalism and then the successful transition to democratic politics. We don't have any doubt about this.'

Many have sadly come to believe the lies of the secularists that the Christian faith does not have a place in modern society. Stuart Piggin and others reveal the opposite: Modern society exists only because of Christian Faith and will collapse without it.

Stuart says it is way past time for the Church to know and boldly take up its crucial role.

Is Jesus Like Joe?

Joe was a drunk, miraculously converted in a street outreach mission. Before his conversion he'd gained a reputation as a derelict and dirty wino for whom there was no hope. But following his conversion to Christ, everything changed. Joe became the most caring person at the mission. He spent his days there, doing whatever needed to be done. There was never anything he was asked to do that he considered beneath him. Whether it was cleaning up vomit left by some sick alcoholic, or scrubbing toilets after men had left them filthy, Joe did it all with a heart of gratitude. He could be counted on to feed any man who wandered in off the streets, undress and tuck him into bed, when he was too out-of-it to take care of himself.

One evening, after the mission director delivered his evangelistic message to the usual crowd of sullen men with drooped heads, one of them looked up, came down to the altar and kneeled to pray, crying out for God to help him change. The repentant drunk kept shouting, "Oh God, make me like Joe! Make me like Joe! Make me like Joe!"

The director leaned over and said, "Son, wouldn't it be better if you prayed 'make me like Jesus?'"

After thinking about it for a few moments, the man looked up with an inquisitive expression and asked, "Is He like Joe?"'

Grieving

Have you ever had to grieve? I was reading an article today, and found the following 5 pre-requisites for healthy mourning for loss.

(1) Commitment to grieving as a healthy personal priority, without excessive guilt, ambivalence, or anxiety.

(2) Consistent inner and outer permissions to (a) feel and (b) express our natural shock, disbelief, rage, and despair - over and over; and to (c) turn our mental confusion into clarity and order, over time, by asking questions, and repeated venting, discussion, and meditating.

Positive Interventions

Today I was told of a concept called "positive interventions", which basically encourages us to to look for the positive in any situation. I find it interesting!

One exercise for an application of this concept is called "Daily Three Blessings". At the conclusion of each day identify three things that went well and why. Do that regularly. Statistics show that people who have the attitude of gratitude are happier and less depressed.

Another application of this concept is to take the initiative to support other people to validate each other in a way that makes them happier and feel better.

In addition, we should say yes to positive emotions, engaging to others, noble purpose, building positive relationships, enabling good conditions of life, and contributing to the society.

Post-Olympics & Paralympics

Now that the Olympics and Paralympics are over, Beijing can get back to its old ways, right?

According to the Wall Street Journal, while the Olympic guests from all over the world may be gone and construction work in Beijing started up again, other measures are extending the Olympic spirit a bit further into the daily lives of people in the capital of China.

Some of the Olympics security measures are also staying put. Authorities decided that bag screening on the subway system will be retained permanently. A municipal public security official said that over 18,000 contraband items were found in the 72 million bag searches conducted during the Olympics period, and 32 people detained.

And for the National Day holiday (1 st October), some security measures in Beijing are even exceeding the Olympic efforts. Beijing media reports that subway stations near Tiananmen Square are closed from Sept. 29 to Oct. 3 and trains will skip those stops during this period. Olympic-style security checks at parks and tourist sites will be retained during this period, and additional crowd control measures will be put in place at a popular pedestrian shopping street.

Some Facts About The Two-Third World

They say when speaking or writing if you want to grab people’s attention, grab it early, grab it impactfully, and grab it precisely. They don’t say the grabbing has to be positive or soothing so let me be precise, if unsettling. Let me paint a not too positive picture about current world situations:

About 5 million children per year die per year from diarrhoea and related conditions in developing countries. This is the largest single cause of death of young children.

About 16 million cases of malaria are reported annually.

About 3 million children under five die annually from malaria.

About 3.5 million children under five in developing countries die each year from one of the six following diseases which can be largely prevented by immunization:
- diphtheria;
- whooping cough;
- tetanus;
- measles;
- polio;
- tuberculosis.

Probably as many become disabled from through these largely preventable diseases.

- About 0.5 million children each year become blind from vitamin A deficiency. Two-thirds of these children die.

- About 6.7 million children show signs of moderate vitamin A deficiency making them more vulnerable to infections and other diseases.

- There is 10% more food in the world than would be needed to feed every person on earth, but 730 million people are too weak from hunger to work.

- Chronic malnutrition kills 50 million people a year and affects one-quarter of humanity. (50 million a year = nearly 100 a minute).

- The world spends enough ($17,000 million) on weapons every two weeks to provide food, health care, water and education for everybody on earth!

- Over 0.5 million women in developing countries die each year from pregnancy-related causes, leaving at least one million infants without mothers.

- Only a little over 1/3 of children under five living in developing countries have access to clean water.

Is there anything you can do about these?

Excitement & Promotion

Yesterday I was told that I am an excitable person. I think that's true! I find that even little things can make me smile, laugh and happy :) And I don't have a problem promoting the people, things or events that I believe in!

Recently a number of things really excite me (apart from the fact that I am getting married in a few months :)), and I am promoting them. As you can see in my previous posts, I am excited about the fringe festival, particularly Michael Connell's stand up comedy show JUST ME, as well as the Special China Focus Night (China beyond the Olympics) I am hosting where the opportunity to support and work with various projects in China will be shared.

Also, I am really pumped about the Global Poverty Project, which was just launched in New York. I have a strong concern for the world's poor, and I am passionate about contributing to making poverty history. I believe in the impact that the Global Poverty Project is going to make to combat extreme poverty, and am extremely excited about the 90 minute feature slideshow that will be delivered around the world as a result of this project. I want to be part of this.

Another thing I can't wait today is the grand-final BBQ in my friend's home - yes I'm more excited about the BBQ and the chance to catch up with friends than watching footy (for my readers who are not familiar, footy is the Australian rule football) ...but hey any reason for a party right? - especially on such a lovely warm day!!

Go cats, go hawks, and go doggies - yes I informally support the western bulldogs hehe!

China is tranforming - becoming a fundamentally different society. The once backward and feudal "sleeping giant" is undergoing modernization with incredible acceleration. JUST ME

I just came back from seeing Michael Connell's "Just Me" - which includes stand up, film and music. I really enjoyed the show, and couldn't stop laughing the whole time.

Michael shared about his high school experience, as a sudoku champion and a supremo on the harmonica. The thing that impressed me about Michael and his show is that he is hilarious yet inspiring, and clean.

I agree with Beat Magazine, which says that "His show is intelligent, moving, and most importantly, funny! You'll be impressed"

Welcome Back Australian's Olympians

Australia's Olympians, having achieved so much in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, received an extremely warm welcome of loud and happy cheers in Sydney on Tuesday.

With a total of 46 medals earned by the Australian Olympians, including 14 gold, the Olympic team was greeted by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and hundreds of family and friends.

Most of the 435 Olympians arrived home early Tuesday after finishing sixth in the medal tally and winning a podium position in 14 sports. The team was obviously "pumped" to be back in Australia.

Kevin Rudd said the preparations for the 2012 London Olympics would begin today. "Every man, woman and child in this nation Australia is proud of every one of you, well done," he told the athletes.

"To hear the roar of the crowd in China welcoming this great team for Australia says for me one thing - you are great ambassadors for Australia and the nation thanks you," the prime minister said.

YAY! We are proud of you! :)

China Games Pilgrimage

I can't believe it's already August 20. I have already been in China for 21 days. The pilgrimage has been fantastic, and I have learned so much during this trip. The Olympic atmosphere here in Beijing is awesome, as is the opportunity to meet with many people from various countries, doing community festivals and connecting with the locals. I have truly understood the difference between being a pilgrim as opposed to just being a tourist. More sharing to come later.

I am heading to China

Some of you may know that I have been considering being a part of an international team heading to China for the China Games in August for a long time now (the idea came to mind 3 years ago in fact). Finally the time has come!

My team and I are heading over to China as part of the core team where we will be working with, and leading, people from across the globe. The trip goes for three weeks and is aimed to leave a committed local Chinese team that is supported by the churches and is committed to the transformation of their community. The workers in China have connected with local people in 5 cities through Open Crowd festivals. From this time there would be about 200 local Chinese people that call themselves part of the team, including people from different churches as well as several high Communist officials that are all really excited about these festivals and the impact that they are having on local communities. All in all, there will be over 80 people going to China from Australia, and over 120 from all over the world.

As we look at the growth and development of China, as well as the heart of their leaders as they seek to “find what will make China be the best country in the world” (while admiring Christian values), we see that God is opening up a global impact opportunity through these China Games. I will also visit an orphanage and churches both in Beijing and Shanghai. I want to share this exciting news with you as my friends and supporters and would like to invite you into this part of my life’s journey.

Today God spoke to me through a verse, "Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don't try and figure out everything on your own. Listen for God's voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; He's the one who will keep you on track." Proverbs 3: 5-6 Message.

Living With A Purpose

Recently I have been thinking quite a bit about different aspects of my life, including my spiritual life, health, work and ministry, social, community, finance and future family (I will be getting married May next year). Today the phrase 'living with a purpose' came to mind, and I remember a well-known book which I read few years ago, called "The Purpose Driven Life".

As I am sure many of you know that 'The Purpose Driven Life' is written by Rick Warren, and has been on the New York Times Best Seller list for a while. It presents what Warren says are God's five purposes for human life on Earth.

One of the things that Warren mentions is how the quest for personal fulfillment, satisfaction, and meaning can only be found in understanding and doing what God placed us on Earth to do. Warren explains God’s five purposes for each of us:

(1) We were planned for God’s pleasure, so our first purpose is to offer real worship.
(2) We were formed for God’s family, so our second purpose is to enjoy real fellowship.
(3) We were created to become like Christ, so our third purpose is to learn real discipleship.
(4) We were shaped for serving God, so our fourth purpose is to practice ministry.
(5) We were made for a mission, so our fifth purpose is to live out real evangelism.

I pray that these five purposes will be fulfilled in all areas of my life. And I want to be ready to respond, be enthusiastic, anticipate and have self discipline and strong desire to live a purpose driven life.

Are You Ready?

I heard a DVD recently by Richard Flint that talks about the process that allows us to break free the circle of "sameness'. In his talk, Richard claims that life is not about the situation we are in, but is about the questions we ask, because we are the result of the behaviours that we implement.

He uses the acronymn of 'ready' to suggest how to live a good life, which I find quite useful:

R = Responding not reacting
E = Enthusiam
A = Anticipation
D = Discipline
Y = Your desire stronger than your fear

English Club & Docklands Hub

I've been working at Docklands Church in Melbourne, Australia for about 2 months now, and have been really enjoying it. Recently I'm organising an English Club to help students whom English is their second language.

Docklands Church has partnered with the City of Melbourne to conduct free English Conversational Classes for international students at Docklands Community Hub.

International Students make up 15% of the Docklands demographic, a sizeable number of people. The English Club would provide international students an opportunity to learn and improve their conversational English, comprehension, as well as assimilation into Australian culture. The sessions of the English Club will include games, group discussions, practical and cultural issues and conversational topics. We expect the classes to also provide a social network for students, and anticipates the club will be well received.

Docklands and surrounding areas are not only a great place to hang out and live, it is also a great place for international students to realise their potential, with quality environment, friendly people and excellent value. Docklands Church is a welcoming community that seeks to provide practical, emotional and spiritual support for international students as they adjust to life in a foreign culture. Apart from the English Club, Docklands Church also organises regular social activities for international students. Some of the activities coming up include an evening with okonomiyaki (Japanese pancake) with board games, Chinese steam boat (hot pot) night, camp, movies, international dinner party, horse riding, sightseeing trips, picnic and sports etc.

Powerful Thoughts

Thoughts are powerful, as they create our experiences. A famous Chinese Proverb says, "Sow a thought, reap an action; Sow an action, reap a habit; Sow a habit, reap a character; Sow a character, reap a destiny." And there is some truth in that, isn't there?

I believe we create our thoughts, our thoughts create our intentions, and our intentions create our reality. Hence it is important to focus on and be aware of your thoughts as they can either hold you back or move you forward. Understanding and creating powerful thoughts helps you answer life's questions, as well as leading you to your dreams and goals.

Habits

Philip Adams, of The Age newspaper once wrote, "We are surrounded by habits, defined by habits, all but consumed by habits. In our clothing, in our attitudes, in our behaviour and our habitation....There is so little we do that isn't done from habit."

It has been said: Sow a thought, reap an action; Sow an action, reap a habit; Sow a habit, reap a character; Sow a charater, reap a destiny. And there is some truth in that, isnt' there? Our habits are the result of repeated actions, but they shape much of our lives, our responses and thus our character, and ultimately our destiny.

A Willingness To Be

Lately I'm grappling yet again with reconciling the ambition to do with a willingness to be. I am such a busy and active person that often times, I find it difficult to just slow down, pause and just BE.

John Maxwell said it so meaningfully, 'most of us have an inner drive to do something - a restlessness to make something happen. At the same time, joy is discovered in the peaceful quiet of a soul at rest. Alongside our restlessness for change, we have a need for relaxation and recreation.' We need to find that balance!

We nourish ourselves whenever we enter into activities that build our energy reserves, through music, thoughts, experiences, friends, recreation, and memories etc. In the midst of all the activities, we need to pursue a willingness to just be, to search for our life purpose, and to nourish our inner soul regularly.

The Three Ds of New Habit Formation

In one of the Success University elective course I learned the three Ds of New Habit Formation, which I found quite useful. I learned that we need three key qualities to develop the habits of focus and concentration, which are all learnable. They are decision, discipline, and determination.

First, make a decision to develop the habit of task completion. Second, discipline yourself to practice the principles you are about to learn over and over until they become automatic. And third, back everything you do with determination until the habit is locked in and becomes a permanent part of your personality.

You have an unlimited ability to learn and develop new skills, habits, and abilities. When you train yourself, through repetition and practice, to overcome procrastination and get your most important tasks completed quickly, you will move yourself onto the fast track in your life and career and step on the accelerator.

Mediocrity Versus Significance

Today in an online conference call of Success University, we were asked this question: "do you prefer mediocrity or significance?" Without any delay, I answered, "I prefer significance".

I was told that too many of us try to right the world's wrongs from the outside-in. The outside-in approach lends itself to what might be called official mediocrity. A Chinese proverb says, "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for life." Human being, generally, is not equipped for mediocrity. We would not be equipped with the ability to imagine future accomplishment and conditions if we were not correspondingly equipped with the ability to turn those imaginings into reality.

We are made in the image of God, hence we are made for significance. Yet we frequently use diversion in our lives as a tool to avoid direct confrontation with our innermost feelings, and to avoid accepting total responsibility for who we are and what we do. Instead of working on what is going on inside us, we try to rearrange things around us.

The responsibility for us to be sigificance is ours.

Content & Process

Have you ever found yourself talking to somebody and picking up a strange feeling that there's something else going on beyond just the content of the words? Or maybe you've tried to share your opinions or your faith with someone else and have felt you've offended them, that they've moved almost physically away from you?

I learned that there is a difference between the words said (content) and everything else that is going on, unsaid, in a relationship (process). Learning how to read the processes and responding to them is a very important lession in interacting or living with others. So often, we tend to focus on content (words) alone. There are many times when mere words are not enough, and in any situation we need to understand the process as well.

Jesus facinates me! If you study the New Testament, you'll find that He ministered to the processes. The Pharisees came to Him with their theological games. They would ask Him a trick question to get Him to respond at the level of content, but He could see what was going on; He could see the processes and revealed their motivation! In the story of the Samaritan woman at the well, Jesus was aware of the processes and ministered to her as a human being from suspicion and distance to helping her open up and being transformed.

I tend to be a content (words-oriented) person. From now on, I want to learn from Jesus and focus on the processes and to develop the skill of seeing and responding to the processes in my relationships, with with individuals and within groups.

Team Leadership

I heard a CD by John Maxwell, which talks about leadership. I was very challenged and encouraged by it.

John said that leaders orchestrate environments, environments impact behaviors, and behaviors determine the fate of the organization. He mentioned the following 10 questions leaders ask to create a winning environment. Here they are:

"Do I understand what it takes to be a team?"
"Are my expectations crystal clear?"
"Do my people understand why what we do is important?"
"Does my team define success with their customer?"
"Am I holding people accountable for their performance?"
"Do I seek out barriers and remove them to make the team's job easier?"
"Do I give people the freedom required to learn, grow, and deliver?"
"Do I foster a culture of inclusion by hiring people who are different than I am?"
"Am I a consensus builder?"
"Have I created a caring environment among team members?"

I think they are excellent questions, and leaders from all various organisations need to consider.

Faith

The Scriptures indicate that it's the pure in heart, rather than the big of brain, who will see God (Matthew 5:8), and Paul prays that his readers might have the 'eyes of their hearts opened,' (Ephesians 1:18).

I read that for Hebrew people, the heart was the place where you made decisions, the will, where you made choices. Jesus says further, "Whoever is willing to do what God wants will know whether what I teach comes from God...." (John 7:17).

We have a faculty beyond just the intellect, that has a moral or volitional element to it, and it's the moral dimension that is involved when we are about the business of knowing God.

In Romans 10:17, Paul tells us that "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing through the Word of God.". Faith is not some kind of religious feeling that you woke up and if you have enough you can buy blessing from God; rather, it has to do with obedience to what God has revealed of Himself.

Beijing Olympic Games

As I am sure you know, The China Olympic Games will be happening in Beijing in August this year. Beijing is an old city full of beauty and mystery, but time has visibly taken its toll over the centuries. With the successful bid to host the Olympics, the ancient town has taken steps towards revealing its historic glory to the world.

China is one of the oldest civilisations on the planet - and yet for many years has been a source of mystery and fascination for outsiders. China has more than 20% of the world's population, and is now opening up to the world in new ways. It will take centre stage for the whole world as host of the Summer Games of 2008.

It is a place with many wonders to see, a rich heritage to experience, a beautiful and diverse land to explore. It has warm people to meet and embrace, and is a place of possibility and opportunity.

As the motto of the China Olympics says, "One World, One Dream". I am looking forward to the historial moments in 6 months time.

Into The Wild

I watched "Into The Wild" the other night, and found it an inspiring movie. Into The Wild talks about this young man who leaves his middle class existence in pursuit of freedom. He gives up his home, family, all possessions but the few he carried on his back and donating all his savings to charity. Then he embarks on a journey throughout America. His eventual aim is to travel into Alaska, into the wild, to spend time with nature, with 'real' existence, away from the trappings of the modern world.

In the 20 months leading up to his Great Alaskan Adventure his travels lead him on a path of self-discovery, to examine and appreciate the world around him and to reflect on and heal from his troubled childhood and parents' abusive relationship. When he reaches Alaska he finds he has been insufficiently prepared for the hardships to come. Despite making it through the winter his plan is ill-judged and prepares to return home in spring, only to find the stream he crossed in the snow has become an impassable raging torrent and that he is trapped. With no means of sustaining himself adequately he eventually dies in isolation.

I think this is a good and meaningful film that tells the truth, and I highly recommend watching it. I totally agree with this young man's tragic realisation before he died: "Happiness is only real when shared".

Living With God, Others And Yourself

There are certain foundations we all need if our destiny is to be fulfilled. Do you believe that? During this last week, I witnessed God's foundations built in the lives of many people from all over the world in Poatina, Tasmania.

Foundations is a training course that runs twice a year over an intensive week in Poatina, as well as in different centres and states all over Australia, during 12 weeknights.

This course opens the doorway to an integrated life-style that enables participants to be more aware of the world around them, and of God’s companionship with them in it.

This unique training and leadership package has been road tested over the last 30 years by thousands of Australians from all walks of life.

Foundations is designed to equip people to act and lead in their Community with confidence, to break open the world of human experience in a way which helps us see who we are and who God is calling us to be.

Foundations is firmly based on the Bible and has a unique integration of Christian theology, basic psychology and skills training in managing group dynamics.

There are 3 streams in the course:

Living with God
Is designed to help us come to terms with our lives with God, helping us learn how to distinguish between His voice and the host of other human needs and prejudices that clamour for our attention. Topics include Faith, a biblical picture of the nature of humanity, the Glory of God, the Problem of Evil, Forgiveness, Eternal Life and Living in the Kingdom Now.

Living with Others
Helps us develop practical skills which allow us to become vehicles of love, grace, change and growth for others. Living with Yourself
Takes us on a journey of self discovery into the make up of our souls, looking at the forces that have shaped us, the impact our physiology has on our emotional and spiritual world (and vice versa), where our attitudes come from and how we can grow to become more of the person God created us to be. Topics include Body, Soul & Spirit, Habits, Attitudes, Values, Guilt, the central nervous system, love and Sexuality.

Foundations

Have you ever asked yourself what are the foundations of your life? I am now in Poatina, a village resort in Tasmania (the little island in Australia) doing a course called "Foundations" with Fusion Australia. I am learning how to live with and encounter God, others and myself, and I am having an absolute ball. I will sum it all up when the course finishes and when I go back to Melbourne. I am also having an extremely wonderful time connecting with people from mainland China, and learning about the preparation of the festivals during the China Olympics Games in August this year.

Time Management & Personal Development

Today I received an email from a good friend of mine with the subject: "I need help!". In her email, she expressed her struggle of lacking drive, motivation, time and energy to pursue her interests and clear the clutter in her life. She said that she'd love to know the secret of time management.

Time is so precious isn't it? While the choice is yours in how to spend your day, the best way to maximize your time is by organisizing it. The followings are some of the steps / secrets of time management that I find useful:

Make a To-Do List: I often find that making a list of things and prioritize every item helps me organise my time, as in consolidate similar tasks (eg: checking emails and responding to instant messaging).

Be careful not to get distracted: Very often a schedule gets thrown off track by distraction. Be aware of that, and when that happens, stop what you are doing and get back on schedule (this one I need to learn as I often get side-tracked by facebook and unimpoartnat online chats).

Tick off items as you complete them: Every time you finish doing something, cross it off your to-do list. I like to do this, as it often gives me a sense of accomplishment throughout the day, and it keeps me on track on my priorities :)

I also believe that goal-setting / new year resolutions can help us in terms of building motivation, drive and energy to pursue our dreams and interests. Decide what you want, define it clearly and write it down. Put the list of your goals where you'll see them. Review them on a regular basis. That way, your activities are geared toward accomplishing what you really want in life, rather than letting the days go by without purpose.

I learned that to create powerful results in your life, you must create a powerful emotional state. If you are feeling tired or down, exercise, move your body, go to the gym or do whatever you need to get your blood flowing; when you change your physiological state, you change your emotional state.

Faith, Purpose And Success

I am a strong believer of approaching life, business, work and ministry purposefully, and let my faith lead me to real success. Whatever type of work you do, you should do it with excellence and the aim to grow personally and spiritually through the experiences. Dream big dreams and trust God to help you make some of those dreams come true. Expect God to surprise you along the way. Be most concerned about what you can give rather than what you can get. Trust that God will use difficult situations to accomplish something good in the long run.

In regards to business, I learned from my own and other people's experiences that it is important to strive to do your best to serve your customers, whether they are outside your business or within it. Make the time to truly listen to your customers so you clearly understand what they want. Treat them with respect and kindness. Beyond improving your business -- and your own career success, as a result -- your service to customers is an important way of reflecting God's love in the marketplace.

Invest in mentoring relationships. Build relationships throughout your professional life that can benefit both you and others for years to come by seeking out some mentors and serving as a mentor yourself. Consider what specific ways you hope to grow professionally. One of the ways I am currently doing that is through Success University.

As you interact with people while doing your job, let God's love flow through you to encourage them and help them overcome their challenges, sadness and hopelessness. Keep in mind that God doesn't measure your impact by how impressive your job description is, but by how well you've done your job and demonstrated His love for the people you encounter.

Wealth, Success & Diligence

It's believed that the ancient king Solomon is the wealthiest man who ever lived. Solomon became King of Israel around 974 B.C.. According to the Scripture, God granted Solomon one desire. Solomon asked for wisdom so that he could lead the people of Israel. God was so impressed with Solomon’s selfless request that He not only blessed him with wisdom, but also with wealth.

Solomon’s wisdom, success, and wealth increased beyond imagination. During his life, Solomon penned the book of Proverbs in the Bible. Surviving from generation to generation, his writings have influenced the world for thousands of years.

Below are some of King Solomon’s writings on the importance of diligence as portrayed by author Stuart Scott in the book of Proverbs.

“The hand of the diligent will rule, but the slack hand will be put to forced labor” (Proverbs 12:24).

“The soul of the sluggard craves, but he gets nothing.” (Proverbs 13:4)

“He that tills his land shall be satisfied with bread, but he that follows vain persons is void of understanding” (Proverbs 28:19).

Solomon gives us three steps we can use quickly to bring diligence into our lives:

1. Wake Up to Reality.

“How long will you lie there,” he asks. “When will you get up from your sleep?...poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man.” (Proverbs 6:9-11)

2. Define Your Vision.

“Without a vision, the people perish.” (Proverbs 29:18)

3. Effectively Partner With Others.

“A man who isolates himself seeks his own desire; he rages against all wise judgment.”(Proverbs 18:1)

Never Give Up

This great Winston Churcill's saying "Never Give Up" not only serves as a great motivational advice, but it has also become one of my personal mottos. It is one of the things I have learned in my brief time on this earth: If you want to reach your goals and find success in this life, you simply must embrace this powerful idea of never quit!

Earl Nightingale said that the phrase "never give up' is a potent mental soundtrack that wise and successful people silently play in their heads as an accompaniment to their daily lives. Now that is insightful!

I also believe that this important motto puts persistence and perseverance into our lives, and so impacting the very essence of who we are as a person. The great Thomas Edison is a prime example of someone who never gave up - and hence achieved the success that he did.

So let me encourage you this: Never never never give up!

How To Have A Winning Year

We let fear stop us from pursuing our dreams.

It's hard to accept criticism, but constructive criticism is good for us. Don't defend yourself. Just get better from it.

Integrity and Honesty are important in life, business and ministry.

You want to be great? There is nothing wrong with that, but how to be great is more important than being great. If you want to be great, you need to serve! Serving others and losing yourself is one of the most challenging things to do - but that is the route to being great.

You can have anything in life you want, if you can help others achieve what they want.

You don't have to get it perfect, you just have to get it going.

The Importance Of Residual Income

The concept of residual or passive income is probably one of the most important powerful concepts you will ever learn in your lifetime.

Anyone that can master the concept of residual income is on their way to a good and meaningful lifestyle. Simply put, residual income occurs by building a system one time that can produce a recurring stream of revenue once the system is set up.

This income arrives on a regular basis. It can occur on a monthly, weekly, or daily basis. The frequency depends on the business system itself.

Is It Wrong To Be Rich?

The belief that wealth is wrong is more social than scriptural. It is a rationalization imposed upon by many of those who choose not to earn much wealth. It is a philosophy with which we have all had to live at some level during our lifetimes. It's what we do with money that matters. It's how we get it that counts.

In one of the courses in the curriculum of Success University, I learned that to the extent that money is a measure of the services we perform for others, its accumulation is noble. To the extent that we press our money into the service of those we love (or those in need may I add), to provide them with as warm and as comfortable and as secure an existence as possible, its disbursement is inspired and devine.

How To Keep Our Soul In Shape

I know that many people have 'being fit physically' as their New Year Resolution, but for me, I think having a fit soul is just as, if not more, important!

I read that when Philip Yancey turned 50, he had a complete physical as well as a spiritual checkup. During his spiritual checkup, he pondered what he needed to change to keep his soul in shape.

He came up with a spiritual action plan for his next 50 years, which I found very inspiring. Below is a summary of his spiritual action plan:

(1) Question your doubts as much as your faith.
(2) Do not attempt this journey alone.
(3) Allow the good (eg:natural beauty,encouraging words)to penetrate in your life.
(4) For your own sake, simplify.
(5) Find something that allows you to feel God's pleasure.
(6) Always "err," as God does, on the side of freedom, mercy, and compassion.
(7) Don't be ashamed. "I am not ashamed of the gospel," Paul told the Romans.
(8) Remember, those Christians who peeve you so much—God chose them too.
(9) Forgive, daily, those who caused the wounds that keep you from wholeness.

Have you done your spiritual checkup in the New Year yet? As Philip Yancey said, our spiritual checkup offers one clear advantage over our physical checkup: "no matter what I do my body will continue to deteriorate, but, spiritually I can look forward to growth and renewed vigor as long as I listen and then act on what I hear God saying." Meaningful isn't it?

Accepting The Challenge Of Success

Through the curriculum of Success University, I read the follow somber words of William James, which really got me thinking:

"Compared to what we ought to be, we are only half awake. Our fires are dampened, our drafts are checked, we are making use of only a small part of our mental and physical resources."

It's true that most of us do little more than exist in a sea of mediocrity. And yet we must grow, we must be willing to take risks, to develop our potential, and to become who we are created to be. We were not placed on this earth to be little more than walking vegetables.

In this new year, I am committed to going forward, choosing growth, overcoming fear and accepting the challenge of success for the glory of God.

Mission 2008

Earl Nightingale said, "People with goals succeed because they know where they are going. It's as simple as that."

Success or failure as a human being is not a matter of luck, circumstances, fate, or any of the other clichés. Those are only excuses. I think it’s much easier to get what you want out of life when you know where you’re going. Because of that, I've written a short paragraph as my mission 2008:

My Mission 2008 is to express my willingness to learn , and persistence by continually learning and applying new ideas, by being committed to ongoing personal and professional development, by making sure my job always gets done, and to create massive action, hence massive results so that I can earn passive income by the end of this year.

When I achieve passive income, I will use it to contribute to worthy causes, ministries, mission and charity work.

How To Count Your Blessings

One of the things that I sense the Lord tell me time and time again is "count your blessings - not your worries!"

In Dale Carnegie's best seller, 'How to Stop Worrying and Start Living", he talked about an experience of seeing a man who had no legs. This man was sitting on a platform with wheels from roller skates. He greeted Carnegie, "Good morning, sir. It is a fine morning, isn't it?" he said with spirit. As Carnegie stood looking at him, he realized how rich he was. He had two legs. He could walk. He felt ashamed of his self-pity. He said to himself if he could be happy, cheerful, and confident without legs.

Since then, he had the following words pasted on his bathroom mirror, and he read them every morning as he shaves:

I had the blues because I had no shoes,
Until upon the street, I met a man who had no feet.

Why don't you stop right now and ask yourself: "What in the world am I worrying about?" You will probably find that it is comparatively unimportant and insignifant. I believe that the habit of looking on the best side of every event is worth more than a thousand pounds a year.

Wealth And Wisdom

I read a quote by Hans Selye today from Success University which really got me thinking. And I'd like to share with you: "A clear distinction must be made between our final aims - the ultimate achievements that give purpose to life - and the means through which we hope to attain them. For example, money is never a final aim; it has no value in itself. It can only act as a means, helping us to reach some ultimate goal which, to us, has inherent value.

I think Hans Selye is right. Although wealth may come to some people in fortuitous ways, this is the exception not the rule. Many people think of wealth as simply an abundance of money or possesions, but wealth can come in many different forms. The Book of Proverbs in the Scripture is very clear that wealth is connected with wisdom (but if there was a choice, I'd choose wisdom over wealth anyday). In fact, Solomon tells us that wealth is one of the side products of wise living. Once wealth is acquired, wisdom will help us use it generously and prudently. If our thinking is right and our motive pure and our conscience clear, then the building of wealth becomes a joyful journey.

New Year, New Start!

Happy New Year everyone! Pray that you will all have a fantastic 2008, filled with joy, love, peace and happiness all the time, free of fear and worry, continually in the process of accomplishing worthwhile goals, and is totally well adjusted in life's major areas: spiritual, physical, emotional, mental and social.

I have written a personalized Mission Statement for my life. I think it's very important for us to have mission / purpose in life, and that we are never too young or too old to have a mission. Also, as your mission grows, so will you and your capabilities to MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

You know what? We can improve our 2008 by accomplishing the goals that we set forth in our own personalized Mission Statement. The Mission Statement works because our goals are identified. I believe that once our goals are identified in the beginning of the year, they can then be cultivated and nurtured throughout 2008 with hard work, daily action and determination. And when we multiply our hard work on our mission throughout the year, we will have accomplished something that few do: success.
